The Fourth Asia CCUS Network Forum
Event Description
After COP26 held in Glasgow, UK in Autumn 2021, many Asian countries echoed western countries for the need to find pathways to achieve carbon neutral by 2050 or beyond with international assistance, but any pathway will need to pay attention to accessibility, availability, and affordability of energy supply in order to accomplish reasonable economic growth continuously to 2050. Therefore, in the energy transition period towards carbon neutral beyond 2050, fossil fuels will be indispensable continuously but with emission abatement. For power generation sector, “Coal to Gas” shift is an important policy but increase of Clean Coal Technology (CCT) with high thermal efficiency technology is also essential to reduce CO2 emission from Business As Usual (BAU). Then, after 2040, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology will be applied to coal and gas power plants with commercial basis to cut 90% of CO2 from the power plants. For transport sector, although promotion of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), and Hydrogen Vehicles including Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV) are highlighted, application of synthetic fuels is also considered to reduce CO2 emissions as another paths. Then, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is a crucial technology for producing synthetic fuels based on captured CO2 and blue or green hydrogen. Beside fuel switching towards cleaner fuel such as gas as well as renewable energy, the clean technologies such as an application of ammonia, hydrogen, and CCUS is/and will be appropriate for Asian region to achieve net zero emissions.
